Digital Envisioner

Think outside the box, ask silly questions and make odd suggestions to nudge towards something new innovative and that changes the way we do things for the better. Question tech for tech's sake. Be ready to pivot towards something better.

A digital envisioner loves technology and business and has a real thirst for learning and discovering how tech can improve and simplify people's lives. New tech products and services should be cost-effective and work efficiently, both at launch and ongoing.

A natural entrepreneur is just as excited by someone else's startup ideas as they are with their own innovations. But they also have an ability to think laterally and see things from many angles, ensuring all new ideas are well planned, scoped and continually reviewed to ensure a good product-market fit.

Startup Analyst and Strategist

A tech startup strategist has the ability to see the bigger vision - researching and analysing the product, market, pricing and competition in detail.

Draw up a business plan, not as a box filling exercise, but to give people a clear understanding of the opportunities and potential pitfalls. Honesty is key.

Translate the business plan into the necessary tactical steps, operational processes, management plans and a technical architecture plan.

A strategist must continue to analyse a business, documenting its data, models, processes, operations and systems, all of which guide the direction of travel as the business grows.

Technology Architect

A technology architect has the combined strategic, tactical and technical knowledge to filter the business goals & plans down and translate them into a tech architecture plan used to draw up detailed hardware and software solutions.

The architect's role is to get inside the head of the business and help transform and guide it using the best technology available suited to the requirements and in line with budgetary and other constraints.

Technology architecture isn't static. Envision the right technology at the right time and anticipate how it will change shape and size as the business grows or even as it pivots.

Project Manager

Putting together the right people and picking winning technology is just the beginning.

A clearly defined plan must be created and maintained, establishing and outlining tasks, milestones, allocation and status of resources and concrete deadlines.

Projects sometimes go off-plan, so anticipating problems and changes and finding resolutions early on is essential to ensure things stay on track and within agreed budgets.

Being able to work with developers and non-technology stakeholders is vital.

Early Stage CTO

An early-stage CTO links strategy and tactics, translating business goals into technology & projects. Be lean and agile, be smart, be efficient. Always be ready to adjust to fit the goals and support the business.

Draw on broad technical experience to find, coach & mentor tech talent. Foster a tech-friendly culture within the business.

Technology supports the business from finance and operations to product development and user experience to reporting and analysis, even in a tech company. Be the constant link.

MVP Developer

Have a broad range of development skills and a good understanding of the entire software development process. All sharpened in large banks, multi-national corporations, software consultancies and young online B2B and SaaS startup businesses.

Be confident with a blank script ready to build a proof of concept, MVP and the next big thing. But the early-stage beta will one day grow, so understand the skills needed to manage, maintain and enhance such systems carefully.

Meticulous planning, design, specification & testing must all come as standard.

My 39-Year Tech Journey

Syntax error at line 40

I first touched a computer keyboard in 1982, aged 14. But this wasn't until I'd been forced at school to learn to code using just paper and pencil. We posted our programmes to the nearby college, where they were re-keyed onto a mainframe the size of a tennis court and our results sent back in the post seven days later, usually marked "syntax error at line 40".

Who needs more consultants?

Since those early days, I have gained a degree in computation from UMIST and had a successful career as an IT consultant at Logica, IBM, Reuters, Bankers Trust, Deutsche Bank and several digital agencies. I even left it all behind for a short whole to become a scuba diving instructor and run my own dive school!

Serious BigCorp consultancy gives you some excellent core management skills such as project management, team leadership, consultancy, planning, research and analysis. But honestly, the world doesn't need more consultants.

There at the start of the internet,... and mobile

Something else was calling, and my entrepreneurial talents started to come alive whilst I was teaching myself html, php, mysql and other web programming skills in the mid-1990s.

This led to me publishing my first website 25 years ago in 1996 and launching a successful dotcom in 1999 by creating the first under-a-tenner domain name business and inventing the web-based DNS dashboard for domains.

I also ran one of the first successful web affiliate schemes, generating 40% of our revenue in 2001.

In the same year, I devised an early no-code solution for hosting simple one-page websites, generating £100k per year from a single £300 server.

I was even an early digital nomad in 2007, running a b2b mobile marketing startup from a beach and the desert.

Success, failure, early and late. But never out

Since the late ’90s, I’ve had great tech venture & startup ideas, awful ones, others that are too early or late and one that failed. I had success and a big exit in the dot-com boom days, and I have felt the lows of being a bootstrapped solo entrepreneur.

In 2021, 25 years after that first website, I am still driven daily by envisioning new digital ideas and businesses, strategising and planning, and building great solutions.

What's next

I get inspired by meeting and working with other entrepreneurs, sharing and exploring ideas and passing on my experience to early-stage founders. And of course, planning and discussing what's next. So if you have the next exciting thing, then let's chat...

I can accelerate your idea and startup plans

As an Interim Cofounder™, I can cover a lot of ground. Schedule a free 30-minute office hours consultation to discuss your idea and plans and discover how I can support and accelerate your startup's success.

From day zero, you need never be alone

With 25 years of experience in my own startups, I know how difficult it is to get started with an idea and a new venture.

If you are on the business or marketing side, seeking help with the tech is a challenge. Whilst developers with great ideas often need to find support with marketing and growing a startup.

Finding investors, pitching, day to day operations and recruitment are also areas where many new founders find they lack experience and need a guiding hand.

Even finding an experienced sounding board rather than friends and family to bounce ideas off and provide much needed mentoring can be difficult.

There are things you don't know, you don't know, and at times it feels a little overwhelming, especially without a cofounder. Even the process of finding a cofounder is fraught with danger.

Get the support of a tech and business veteran

Having first touched a computer in 1982, I have seven years in computing education to degree level and ten years before my startups as an IT consultant at Logica, IBM, Xerox PARC, Reuters, Bankers Trust and Deutsche Bank.

venture architect, tech entrepreneur, startup innovator, entrepreneur in residence, IT consultant, interim co-founder™

The titles may be numerous, but these reflect a broad set of skills and experience that I bring to any startup venture, side-hustle project, investment firm, incubator or accelerator.

Introducing the Interim Cofounder™

I have developed a new cost-effective fractional service to support early-stage founders and those with pre-startup ideas.

The interim cofounder™ is my vision for passing on 39 years of tech, business and startup experience. As a true entrepreneur, I get as excited by other people's ideas as my own and want to support you through every aspect of building your startup.

Your personal one-on-one accelerator

Don't see the interim cofounder™ as an uninterested external consultant. I can embed myself into your startup, feel the whole journey and support, mentor and guide you along the way.

When appreciating what other founders are going through, I've been there and got the t-shirt. Since the late 1990s, I’ve had excellent tech venture & startup ideas, awful ones, others that are too early or late and one that failed. I have felt the lows of being a bootstrapped solo entrepreneur, experienced a big exit in the dot-com boom days and had other successes along the way.

With my experience, I am confident I can dive in and help with anything - as a true cofounder would.

I can plan, design and build your MVP

As an experienced developer, IT consultant and CTO, I can cover a lot of ground. Schedule a free 30-minute office hours consultation to discuss your idea and plans and discover how I can support and accelerate your startup's MVP development.

Designing and building MVP's is a core passion

After twenty-five years of envisioning and creating tech startups, and as a true entrepreneur, I get as much enjoyment from other people's startup ideas and plans as from my own.

Working with other founders and creators to plan, design or build their MVP's is at the core of what drives me.

Seven years in computing education to degree level and ten years as an IT consultant ensures that everything built is meticulously specified, designed and tested to ensure it fits the exact client requirements.

Low/no-code makes MVP building even easier

Over recent years my development skills have broadened from traditional programming languages to incorporate a wide range of low-code and no-code tools.

These are ideal for newsletters or simple products requiring easy payment integrations. But they also allow fast prototyping and the building of more significant MVP/beta apps and other solutions.

Again, even though the build phase can be done quickly with low/no-code tools, other stages of the software engineering lifecycle are not forgotten.

Money-saving deals and free tech services

As a born developer with lots of tech kit around me, I am happy to bring some of this to the table to help reduce your costs as you get started. I will also introduce you to partners who can help save further costs.

Accelerate Your Plans, With a Startup Veteran on Your Team

* Approx £250 or €290

Let me support you every day for up to 5 hours per month. I include everything below, but my time proactively contacting and introducing investors and others is bonus time - I do it for FREE!

Ask Me Anything

I have run my own tech startups for 25 years, so I know how crazy your workload is. You have a lot of questions, many with no answers. It's hard to find an experienced sounding board, and sometimes you need a guiding hand to rein in those extra ideas.

I will deep dive into your idea and plans, embed myself, feel the whole journey and be a veteran cofounder on whom you can rely. Ask me anything, be it vague ideas or your inner thoughts, I will help you work out the questions ... and answers.

Mentoring, Advice & Support

I know what you're going through. It's hard! There are only so many times your family can say 'yes, it looks great'. Everything can feel frantic. There aren't enough hours and probably isn't enough money to do everything. Even finding a cofounder is tough.

Entrepreneurs need advice, and they need it from someone who truly understands. I've spent 25 years envisioning, building and running my own tech startups. I've had wins, seen the downside and understand bootstrapping. Let me be your guide.

Review & Feedback

A website and investment pitch deck are a startup's shop windows. Sadly many look poor or get the wrong message across due to a lack of design or content writing skills. I will review your pitch deck and website and suggest helpful changes.

Too often, the only people to validate a startup idea and the technical solution are the founder's close circle. Sadly, many startups fail because founders are 'convinced it's great' even without proof. I will review your idea and dig into the dev+tech plans.

Investment Support & Intro's

Creating pitch decks, finding and getting investors interested, pitching to them, and the entire process of raising money is gruelling. It can take many months, and the effort is on top of the day to day work involved in building and running your startup.

I have a network of investors, regularly chat with new ones and will make investor introductions. In addition, I will help with research, provide ongoing pitch and investment resources and connect you with other valuable investment advice.

Research & Report

Having spent many years as a bootstrapped founder, I have become adept at discovering things I need to propel myself along. As a result, I now have a vast library of links, information, resources, webinars, events and people (12k on Linkedin).

There are possibly a few gaps in your startup plans. I will carry out research to help fill them in and also proactively highlight things 'you don't know you don't know'. And when I don't have an answer or a suitable person, I know how to find them easily.

Strategy & Planning

Many founders fail to set an early-stage plan and identify the right MVP features. 'The market is $40 billion, and we can sell to everyone' means nothing early on. I will guide your early-stage and MVP plans and provide encouragement along the way.

As an interim cofounder and part of your early journey, I want to support your strategy, help accelerate your plans and pass on my experience to guide you towards success. Ask for my help, but expect pro-active support too!

* The minimum term is one month. Cancel any time. I am available any time via WhatsApp chat or by pre-scheduled Zoom call. Please enquire about bespoke requirements.
